AN ONLINE CONVERSATION ON UK SOUND SYSTEM CULTURE AND THE LEGACY OF REGGAE-AS-RESISTANCE
Music has often been a crucial tool for marginalised communities to find and challenge power, none more so than the UK reggae scene of the 1970s and 80s with its politically charged lyrics and community-focused ethos.
Brent 2020’s No Bass Like Home, in partnership with Free Word, and with contributions from young people from the Blueprint Collective, this energising online stream will feature discussions and music from DJs exploring and commemorating the legacy of 1970s and 80s sound system culture, and how its relevance persists in today’s society and politics.
Hosted by DJ and presenter Erica Mckoy, the conversation invites an intergenerational approach to its music history with musician and DJ Gladdy Wax, founder of CAYA soundsystem Thali Lotus, DJ and Presenter Texas Ranger and Radio Presenter Robbo Ranx.
Post-event, the Blueprint Collective will be curating a playlist touching on the themes raised in the conversation.
